What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy? A Guide to Parts Therapy
Mar 27, 2026
Have you ever felt like different parts of you are pulling in opposite directions?
- One part wants to move forward.
- Another part feels stuck in fear.
- Another part criticizes or doubts you.
This inner conflict is something many people experience, and it’s exactly what Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, also known as Parts Therapy, helps to address.
At Heart Wide Open Wellness, we use holistic, trauma-informed approaches like IFS to help you better understand yourself, heal emotional wounds, and feel more grounded and whole.
What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic model based on the idea that your mind is made up of different “parts,” each with its own thoughts, feelings, and roles.
Instead of seeing these parts as problems, IFS views them as protective and meaningful, even if their behaviors feel frustrating. At the core of IFS is the belief that everyone has a centered, compassionate inner presence called the Self, the part of you that can lead with clarity, calm, and confidence.
Understanding Your “Parts”
IFS therapy helps you identify and work with three main types of parts:
1. Managers
These parts try to keep you in control and prevent pain.
They might:
- Push you to be perfect
- Avoid risk or vulnerability
- Overthink or plan excessively
Managers are often behind anxiety, perfectionism, or control patterns.
2. Firefighters
These parts react when emotional pain is triggered.
They try to quickly “put out the fire” by distracting or numbing you.
This can show up as:
- Avoidance
- Emotional shutdown
- Impulsive behaviors
- Overeating, scrolling, or other coping habits
3. Exiles
These are the parts that carry deep emotional wounds.
They often hold:
- Shame
- Fear
- Grief
- Rejection
- Trauma
Because these feelings can be overwhelming, other parts work hard to keep exiles hidden.
How IFS Helps Heal Trauma and Anxiety
IFS therapy doesn’t try to eliminate parts, it helps you build a relationship with them.
Through this process, you can:
Increase Self-Awareness
Understand why you react the way you do without judgment.
Reduce Inner Conflict
Instead of feeling torn between parts, you begin to feel more aligned and grounded.
Heal Emotional Wounds
By safely connecting with exiled parts, you can process and release past pain.
Improve Emotional Regulation
You gain more control over anxiety, triggers, and overwhelming emotions.
IFS for Anxiety
Anxiety is often driven by protective parts trying to keep you safe.
For example:
- A “what if” part may constantly scan for danger
- A perfectionist part may push you to avoid failure
- A critical part may try to prevent rejection
IFS helps you understand these parts instead of fighting them. When these parts feel heard and supported, anxiety naturally begins to decrease.
IFS for Teens & Adolescents
Teenagers often experience intense emotions, identity shifts, and external pressures.
IFS can be especially powerful for teens because it helps them:
- Understand their inner world
- Navigate peer relationships
- Build confidence and self-esteem
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Steer away from risky behaviors
By learning that all parts of themselves are valid, teens develop a stronger and more compassionate sense of self.
Integrating IFS with Other Therapies
At Heart Wide Open Wellness, IFS is often combined with other effective approaches, including:
- EMDR therapy for trauma processing
- Brainspotting for deeper, body-based healing
- Talk therapy for insight and communication
- Support for depression, grief, and social anxiety
This holistic approach allows for deeper and more lasting transformation.
What an IFS Session Feels Like
IFS sessions are gentle, curious, and non-judgmental.
You won’t be pushed or forced to relive anything before you’re ready.
Instead, your therapist will help you:
- Identify different parts of yourself
- Explore their roles and intentions
- Build trust with those parts
- Connect with your core Self
Over time, you begin to feel more calm, clear, and in control of your inner experience.
You Are Not Broken, You Are Layered
IFS therapy shifts the way you see yourself.
Instead of thinking, “Something is wrong with me,” you begin to understand:
- Every part of you has a purpose
- Your reactions make sense based on your experiences
- Healing comes from compassion, not control
At Heart Wide Open Wellness, we are here to help you reconnect with yourself in a deeper, more meaningful way.
